Beyond Boundaries Mentorship
Bio
Andrew Amini is currently a third-year student at Harvard Medical School. Previously, he graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biological at Cornell University and was selected as a Merrill Presidential Scholar.Â
He has completed research in epilepsy at NYU Langone Hospital in NYC. There, he served as a consultant to epileptologists and created machine learning algorithms to detect and predict epileptic seizures, allowing early warning of patients to reduce seizure morbidity. He continued his research in epilepsy at Cornell, where he worked under Dr. David Deitcher to elucidate the mechanism of epileptogenesis in fruit flies. He helped to identify key protein-protein interactions implicated in the generation of seizures via transgenic techniques and behavioral assays. Â
At Cornell, Andrew developed a passion for teaching and peer mentorship, serving as head teaching assistant in Principles of Biochemistry. He subsequently was recognized with the Cornell Teaching Excellence award for his efforts in this position over two years.
At Harvard Medical School, Andrew is involved in Otologic and Craniofacial surgical research. He is currently investigating the cognitive benefits of cochlear implants on patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Andrew has continued his passion for mentoring students interested in pursuing a career in medicine as a Hope Scholars mentor.
